BIG Government (the REAL America)

Lots of time is spent debating and arguing over what the United States ought to be. Political campaigns provide us with hours and hours of entertainment as they go at each other, being fueled by these debates and arguments.

The debate/argument as to whether the Federal Government is too big or not big enough, I will just leave that issue alone. Nevertheless, I would like for you to consider the role that BIG government plays in my life:

  • Health insurance (which I  need) is too expensive thus requiring the federal government to be involved.
  • The safety of my medications is watched over by the federal government.
  • My current career is heavily regulated by federal guidelines and without them all kinds of mayhem would ensue.
  • I interact daily with those (with gender issues) who need protection by the federal government.
  • Not a day goes by that I don't encounter the marijuana issue (federal, state and local).
  • Racial discrimination laws as put forth by the federal government help make for a fair work and social  environment.
  • I am protected by the Federal Government regarding job place harassment on a daily basis.
  • The wage rate floor below which a company cannot go protects me from predatory company compensation practices (come on now, you know companies are guilty of this).
  • If I am unemployed, then unemployment compensation kicks in.
  • If hurt on the job, I am somewhat protected by workman's compensation guidelines.
  • Every aspect of our telecommunications world is regulated by the federal government (the government decides who gets those precious few frequencies to make money with).
  • The air I breath and the water I drink is protected by the government.
  • Almost every product I buy has some sort of governmental approval stamp on it.
  • Plus, I fully intend to draw social security for retirement some day.
  • and finally, the Federal Government may protect me from  nuclear fallout if they get involved in some sort of misguided military conflict.

The above list I am sure is not complete. There is federal government involvement in almost every aspect of my and your existence.

I could possibly discuss with you how the government could do it better and be more efficient with its' involvement, BUT ....

If the POINT that some are making is that the federal government should be smaller, or less involved, then that kind of talk is just plain CRAZY ... because, that ship of a smaller government has already sailed.

I  don't really care how loud and boisterous an elected official chooses to be. We as a country simply can not go back without wrecking havoc throughout our entire nation. We can not (for financial reasons) even stomach a short governmental shut down over a budget impasse.

Hindsight, of course is always 20-20 and perhaps we made a few wrong decisions along the way (ya think?).

My little list above is "WHO" we are "TODAY."

A prudent response to all of this is "Just Live with It."

Human - Sex/Labor Trafficking

Human trafficking is characterized by the use of force, fraud or coercion to lure their victims into some type of labor or commercial sex act. Not all of these above factors may be present in every situation. Human trafficking is a crime which is seldom reported due to language barriers, fear of traffickers and possibly fear of law enforcement itself. Craigslist, to their credit ... removed the "Personals" section within their online service in March of 2018 due to Federal legislative decree stiffening penalties associated with sex trafficking. It was the right move legally, ethically and morally. Sex trafficking is a subset of the larger issue known as "Human Trafficking." It is not an unreasonable stretch of logic to equate sex trafficking with the trafficking of labor, e.g. illegals being brought into the U.S. for the purpose of working in American businesses. A good number of American businesses are INDEED guilty of said labor trafficking. No place is ...

the NFL & Money (No right or wrong)

Here is my take ... It has been reported that Athletes participating in the league will most likely be susceptible to suffering from CTE and other lingering injuries playing the game. Do note, that many parents are becoming less likely to encourage their children (unless it is the only way out of their socioeconomic status) to play football because of those injuries. The NFL is not expected to stop playing the game because of this harm. Could it be they fear the loss of money and status? Recently, the NFL was shocked by the trend associated with “Colin Kaepernick”  protesting American political and social issues by refusing to honor the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Once again, money was and is the issue here. We have no idea of what the owners of the NFL are thinking because whatever they decided to do was to make sure fans continued to watch and attend football games. Revenue from ticket sales and television viewing is a pretty big deal. Recent relocations of sever...

Trudeau, G7 (or G6 +1) and Trump

I am not altogether displeased with the way President Trump handled himself during this weekend's Economic Summit in Quebec, Canada. And on top of all that, I am impressed with the ongoing Twitter dialogue (if that is what one would call it) with the Canadian Prime Minister, Trudeau. Due to the way in which the opposition here in the United States treats the President, it's not too much of a surprise that the rest of the world thinks they can do the same. The members of the G7 are also politicians playing to their home crowd and they shouldn't expect the US to be any different in protecting the best interests of our country. President Trump  being the street fighter (from, New York) that he is certainly never misses the opportunity to respond in kind. As to tariffs .... it would seem each country has their own set of tariffs to protect their industries. Screaming out loud in economic pain over our need to do the same is disingenuous at best. I am intrigued by the po...
