Korea (Part 2 of 3)

Why are we so deeply involved in Korea? This was my original question. Considering the talk of nuclear war, I think we ought to know why we are even there.

Moving forth from my last blog entry, the Russians (referred to as the Soviet Union during the WWII era) realizing Japan was to lose, rushed right in and occupied the northern portion of Korea while the U.S. established control over the southern portion. I will give you one guess as to who provided the North Koreans the knowledge necessary to develop their nuclear capability.

This unofficial division of Korea (North and South) took place after the surrender of Japan. As we had previously mentioned, Japan occupied Korea up until the war and lost control over it in conjunction with suing for peace with the Allies. Japan leaving Korea left a huge vacuum of power within Korea which the Allies (under Roosevelt, Churchill, Chiang Kai-shek and Stalin) attempted to resolve unsuccessfully.

A trusteeship was established to look over Korean affairs until fair elections could be held. The cold war began and intensified during this period thus making it impossible for the Allies to come together in agreement regarding Korea and its future government.

In spite of this, the U.S. moved ahead encouraging South Korea to hold elections, which they did and the North/South Division of the country became etched in stone.

Remembering that the Koreans desperately wish to be independent and want their entire country to be united helps us understand why the Korean War began.

The 1950's Korean war was an effort by the North Koreans to reunify the country under their control. Objecting to the North Korean kind of political control, the South Koreans responded (with U.S. help) to the call of war and pushed the North Koreans up to the Chinese border. The Chinese decided it was not in their best interests to allow that to happen and joined the fight. At which time the Chinese successfully pushed the South Koreans (and the US military) back to where the war began, ultimately forcing an armistice to end hostilities along with keeping Korea divided.

Net vs Brick-and-Mortar

A market battle is raging NOW between brick-and-mortar stores (Walmart) & the net (Amazon). I suppose the perception is such that an internet store can do it better, have a broader selection & be more responsive to the needs of the consumer. It’s possible that the internet store is more convenient & easier to use. Plus, maybe less expensive. The struggle for the internet store is that they have to figure out how to get the product to the end user …. the “last mile” they would say. Shipping costs can be significant. I recall not too long ago, planning on purchasing a product, where it was being offered something like this … “Buy 1, Get 2nd FREE”, the only thing needed to pay on the second one was shipping & handling. We REALLY Ought to Talk With Each Other

more than we do. It is hoped that we at least have heart to heart conversations with those close @ hand, but even then all kinds of emotional feelings stand in the way of truly communicating … thus very little progress is made in understanding the struggles & needs of another. Coincidentally, I was made aware of the plight of a family in our community. I have been so caught up in my own struggles that I hadn’t even bothered to give thought to others that may be going through similar stresses. As of late, ALL I have been able to focus on has been my problems, my concerns & my needs. SO, WE should TALK more (with everyone) ... & perhaps WE should LISTEN & Truly Care , but WHAT THEN??? Actually, I don’t really know “WHAT THEN?” I will say this. As result of the above knowledge, I don’t feel so alone … I don’t feel so desperate & above all else I am not quite as focused on me me me. Hopefully Roseanne Barr is Feeling the Pain

Racial Prejudice ... is alive & well. Unfortunately ... a significant portion our educational effort focusing on the elimination of the US's racial divide appears to be falling short of its goal. It's a little hard to stomach comments made by rather visible television personalities who most certainly express their hatred of those who are different based upon skin color, etc. These visible personalities have scored big in life's financial lottery, yet they offer nothing more to society in the form of behavior that uplifts us. They in fact tear us down and bury us deeper into the morass of hatred and shame. I am thankful for the fact that ABC canceled Roseanne Barr's show. By doing so, the network is vividly telling the citizens of our country, this kind of behavior and thought is not acceptable.
