We (you & I) vote based upon what we deem to be right, good & in our best interests.
Those best interests most likely are in the form economic, social, national security, & family concerns etc. Our cultural heritage also plays a significant role along with social pressure and perhaps gender. The popular entertainment media & main stream press (I don't want to exclude social media) plays a part in our decisions, also. The issue of "why we vote as we do" is quite complex & in some cases it could be anybody's guess as evidenced by polls etc.
The political process seeks triggers to influence the way we see things & of course encourage us to vote for the candidate they wish for us to support. These triggers can be both negative & positive depending upon which side of the political aisle we reside on. An example of this would be the case of the coal miners in West Virginia. A lot of triggers were pulled which in turn influenced, I am sure their votes.
All of the aforementioned is focused on one thing & one thing alone ... maintaining or obtaining political power by those that want it.
You & I may cast a vote based upon an ideal, principle or vision of how we want something to be. The political candidate wants to tap into that vision in order to manipulate your vote thus allowing the candidate to preserve or gain power.
The candidate couldn't care less about your vision, but to the candidate, power is the target. They either want to keep it or take it away from someone else.
Being a president, judge, senator or representative is pretty heady & powerful stuff, which in turn leads to a potential of significant pay offs today or tomorrow. Thus, the allure.
Therefore, the great debate at the moment (sexual misconduct & very important to us individually) is really a smoke screen to trigger us as voters to vote in a way that allows WHOEVER to regain or maintain power. I dare say that there really is no moral or ethical purity regarding the political process. A case in point would be "Al Franken". He maintained a certain amount of piety when he was attacking those he claimed were impure, but when he too became a target then it became about losing his power. We (the voters) are over here talking about right & wrong, but he is over there trying to figure out how to NOT lose his power. He lost that struggle.
It is typically NOT the SMOKE or FIRE that is the issue & of course occupies our TV/News viewing time, but that which is going on behind the scenes. The gross manipulation of our thoughts in such a way that creates winners & losers.
It's a POWER struggle. NOT for yours or my good but for only one thing ....
So the candidate can win & reap the spoils of that win.
Vested self interest (of the political candidate) at its finest.
